General Description

The original Burwood Beach outfall was constructed in 1935 with screened, but otherwise untreated, effluent discharging at a rate of about 20 ML/day into the surf zone.

Sewerage Catchment:

  • The present outfall receives effluent and sludge from the Burwood Beach STP which services the city of Newcastle and its inner suburbs

Sewage Treatment:

  • The Burwood Beach STP currently employs an activated biofiltration (secondary) process, which was commissioned in 1992.

Outfall:

  • The present outfall was commissioned in June 1989.  It consists of a 2.7 m diameter tunnel, 1900 m long with 10 risers extending through the seabed in a water depth of about 22 m. Nine of the diffusers are used for effluent and diffuser No. 10 is used for sludge. The effluent diffusers have rose heads, each with eight ports. The sludge diffuser also has an eight port rose head, but with an extension consisting of 250mm pipe on the seabed with 50mm diameter ports at 4 m centres.
